Québec’s SODEC will lend up to 95% of a production tax credit in advance

A new direct-loan programme lets qualifying Québec productions borrow against the tax credit they expect to receive.

SODEC’s direct-loan programme opened on 28 September. It advances up to 95% of an anticipated Québec domestic production tax credit.

The usual entry requirement is a favourable preliminary decision from SODEC. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, subject to the programme’s conditions and resources.

This is borrowing against a receivable, not a bigger tax credit. It applies to qualifying Québec domestic productions, which are a different category from foreign production services.

SODEC scheduled an information session for 1 October, with registration closing on 29 September.

Our reading

The value is time. A tax credit usually arrives late in a production’s life; this moves the cash forward to when producers need it.
