Hello Sunshine reportedly cuts half its staff weeks after Witherspoon–Mediawan buyout

Around 30 jobs are said to go as the company narrows its focus to film, TV and Reese’s Book Club, less than three weeks after leaving Candle Media.

Hello Sunshine, the production company Reese Witherspoon founded and that she and Mediawan have just bought back from Candle Media, is letting go of roughly half its employees, according to two trade reports. Deadline and Variety both reported on Friday 30 October, citing unnamed sources, that about 30 jobs are going. A representative for the company declined to comment to either outlet.

The cuts come less than three weeks after Witherspoon and the Paris-based studio group Mediawan announced on 13 October that they were buying Hello Sunshine from Candle Media, the Blackstone-backed company that took control of it in 2021.

Key facts

  • About 30 staff, roughly 50% of the workforce, are being let go, according to both trade reports
  • The company will concentrate on film, television and Reese’s Book Club, plus the marketing, digital and partnership work around them
  • Variety reports that the direct-to-consumer division is the hardest hit
  • Witherspoon and Mediawan announced their purchase of Hello Sunshine from Candle Media on 13 October; the price was not disclosed
  • Candle’s 2021 deal valued Hello Sunshine at about $900m, according to Deadline

What is being cut

According to Deadline, remaining staff will work mainly on film, TV and the book club, with related social and digital marketing and partnerships. Its source described the reduction as expected and part of an effort to refocus the business on its core areas. Variety’s sources said the direct-to-consumer division is being largely dismantled.

This is not the company’s first round of cuts. Under Candle, Hello Sunshine went through at least four rounds of redundancies in two years, Variety says, mostly in unscripted and in Sunnie, a lifestyle brand aimed at younger audiences. Candle closed the kids and animation unit in 2023 and in 2024 folded Hello Sunshine’s live-action work into Candle Studios, run by Hello Sunshine’s then chief executive Sarah Harden, who stepped down a year later. Elsewhere this month, Skydance reportedly reorganised its international business.

A reported discount on the 2021 price

Candle, co-founded in 2021 by Kevin Mayer with Blackstone’s backing, spent heavily under Mayer and Tom Staggs: it paid nearly $3bn for CoComelon owner Moonbug, Deadline reported, and took a controlling stake in Hello Sunshine at a valuation of around $900m. This month’s price has not been disclosed. Variety reports that it was a fraction of the 2021 valuation, and Deadline’s sources say Candle probably lost hundreds of millions of dollars on its investment.

The new owners presented the deal as a return to the company’s roots. In a statement on 13 October, Witherspoon said she was investing alongside Mediawan, which she said had built a global independent studio “by putting creators first”, and called the move a homecoming: Peter Chernin and Jesse Jacobs backed Hello Sunshine at launch in 2016 through The Chernin Group, and Chernin Entertainment is now also part of Mediawan. Hello Sunshine co-founder Seth Rodsky has joined the board with Witherspoon and Mediawan representatives.

Mediawan’s Hollywood shopping list

Mediawan, run by co-founder and chief executive Pierre-Antoine Capton, has been buying US producers. Besides Chernin Entertainment, its labels include Brad Pitt’s Plan B and See-Saw Films, alongside European labels such as Palomar, Wiedemann & Berg, Chi-Fou-Mi and Drama Republic. It says Hello Sunshine joins a network of nearly 100 labels. TheWrap has also named it among companies said to be interested in Lionsgate, as we reported when Lionsgate formed a joint venture with Steven Paul’s SP Media this month.

Hello Sunshine’s credits include Big Little Lies, The Morning Show, Little Fires Everywhere and the 2022 feature Where the Crawdads Sing. This year it released Elle, the Legally Blonde prequel series for Prime Video, and Lucky for Apple TV, Variety reported. The 13 October announcement said Reese’s Book Club would remain a core part of the company’s strategy and its main engine for finding stories to develop.

Our reading

If the reports are right, Hello Sunshine becomes mainly a film and TV producer with a book club that supplies stories and an audience. When Candle was accused of overpaying, it pointed to Witherspoon’s social following and offshoots such as the book club, Deadline noted; the direct-to-consumer division is the part reported to be going. For Mediawan, which keeps adding US producers to its group, it is another label reportedly bought well below its earlier price. Whether more talent-led companies sell at similar discounts is the next thing to watch. More in our deals coverage.
