Simon Pegg joins Paul Giamatti in seaside horror Boutique as Manifest takes AFM sales

Jim Gavin’s first feature casts Giamatti as a tourist and Pegg as the reclusive author whose town hides a murderous secret society. Budget and start date are undisclosed.

Simon Pegg has joined Paul Giamatti in Boutique, a horror film set in an English seaside town, and Manifest Pictures has taken over international sales from XYZ Films ahead of the American Film Market, Deadline reported on 6 November. UTA Independent Film Group handles North American rights. The film is the first feature from writer-director Jim Gavin, creator of the AMC series Lodge 49.

Giamatti plays a tourist who travels to the town that inspired his favourite writer, played by Pegg, and finds it in the grip of a murderous secret society. Pegg brings the recognition of his long runs as Benji Dunn in the Mission: Impossible films and Scotty in three Star Trek features, and of the Cornetto trilogy of comedies he co-created and headlined. Giamatti, a two-time Oscar nominee, currently stars opposite Julianne Moore in Jesse Eisenberg’s The Debut.

A sales mandate changes hands

The material change since spring is who sells the film. When Deadline first reported Giamatti’s casting on 2 March, XYZ Films was to finance and sell Boutique, its executive Guy Danella was among the producers, and a shoot was being lined up for the summer. The November announcement names neither XYZ nor Danella among the producers, and adds Prospect, whose producer list Dread Central published the same day. Neither report says whether the film has been shot, and no start date has been announced.

The producers are selling it as smart genre with a comic streak. Manifest said the film draws on the hold secret societies have on the imagination. Tea Shop’s James Harris placed it in the line of Psycho and Hereditary, and Prospect called it “dark, hysterical, and utterly twisted”. Dan Carey, Giamatti’s partner at Touchy Feely, cited Gavin’s experience running large crews and budgets on Lodge 49, which the company produced.

The producers behind it

Tea Shop Productions, the London company run by Harris and Lane, is the most commercially proven name on the package. Its producer credits include 47 Meters Down, Fall, The Surfer and Curry Barker’s Obsession. Touchy Feely Films is the banner Giamatti runs with Carey. Pegg is represented by Dawn Sedgwick Management.

AFM runs from 10 to 15 November at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles, and Boutique joins a busy genre slate there. Tea Shop is also behind Letitia Wright’s In Her Shadow, which Bankside is selling at the market, while Rosamund Pike’s Feed and Jeremy Renner’s 12 Bullets are among the other new packages announced this week.

Our reading

Boutique arrives with what independent buyers pay for first: two leads with international recognition, a contained premise and a producer with a record of turning modest genre budgets into theatrical hits. The open questions are about delivery. A change of sales agent between casting and market usually prompts buyers to ask who now finances the film and when it will be ready, and neither has been answered publicly.

The next evidence is a start date or a confirmed shoot, followed by the first territory deals out of the market. A North American sale through UTA would settle the film’s release scale.
