Natalia Dyer and Elijah Wood will join original cast members Samuel L. Jackson and John Cusack, who are negotiating the terms of their return, in a sequel to the 2007 supernatural horror 1408, Variety reported exclusively on 6 November. Mikael Håfström, who directed the first film, returns to helm and co-wrote the sequel with Mark Verheiden. Character details for Dyer and Wood remain undisclosed. Jackson and Cusack would reprise their original roles as secondary characters, a source familiar with the project told Variety.

The 2007 1408, released by MGM and based on Stephen King’s 1999 short story, followed author Michael Enslin (Cusack) investigating violent deaths behind room 1408 at New York’s Dolphin Hotel, with Jackson as hotel manager Gerald Olin. Variety cites a worldwide gross of $132 million against a $25 million budget. Cusack has said publicly that 1408 is the one title he would consider sequelling. Plot details for the new film have not been disclosed.

Dyer broke out as Nancy Wheeler on Netflix’s Stranger Things and is in production on HBO’s The Trial of Louise Woodward; she also has Oran Zegman’s Goodbye Girl ahead. Wood continues a horror run that includes Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, The Toxic Avenger and Osgood Perkins’ The Monkey, and is attached to return as Frodo in Andy Serkis’s The Lord of the Rings sequel The Hunt for Gollum.

What Variety’s exclusive does not settle is closed deals for Cusack and Jackson, a budget, or a domestic distributor. AFM is the first formal sales window for the FilmNation package.

FilmNation’s AFM mandate puts the sequel in front of buyers who already know the 2007 title’s margins: a mid-budget King adaptation that over-indexed on cost. Pairing Dyer as the new centre with Wood in support, while legacy leads negotiate secondary slots, soft-reboots the billing rather than restoring a Cusack vehicle. Spyglass’s producer credit and WME Independent’s domestic co-representation point to a split-rights path, not a single-studio pick-up. Whether MGM’s original distribution lineage plays any role in the new rights map remains undisclosed.

Our reading

For horror buyers at AFM, the hook is a recognisable King title with the original director, a younger lead in Dyer, and legacy names negotiating supporting slots rather than carrying the film. Until Cusack and Jackson’s deals close and a budget band appears, treat the package as soft-locked on the new leads and firm on FilmNation’s sales mandate. The next document that matters is a start-of-production notice in Q1 2027 or a visible AFM deal.
