Prime Video has hired Sasha Bühler, who ran original film for Germany, Austria and Switzerland at Netflix, as head of German originals at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios Germany from 1 December 2026. Deadline reported the appointment on 28 October, and Prime Video confirmed it to German media the same day, the news agencies dpa and epd reported. Bühler succeeds Philip Pratt, who is moving to Disney+.
Key facts
- Sasha Bühler becomes head of German originals at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios Germany on 1 December 2026
- She reports to Tara Erer, Prime Video’s director of Northern European originals, UK unscripted and film
- She spent seven years at Netflix, latterly running original film for the German-speaking markets, after more than a decade at Constantin Film
- Her predecessor, Philip Pratt, becomes Disney+’s vice-president of original production for Germany, Austria and Switzerland in early 2027
- Jan Bennemann has taken over Bühler’s former job at Netflix, according to Deadline
The hire completes a turnover at the top of German commissioning. Within a few months, Netflix has replaced its head of film for the German-speaking markets and Disney+ and Prime Video their heads of originals, so producers in the region are pitching to new decision-makers at all three.
What the job covers
According to the company’s announcement, as reported by THE SPOT media & film and epd, Bühler will be responsible for developing, commissioning and launching the German Prime Video originals. She inherits the creative team behind the young-adult series Maxton Hall – The World Between Us (Maxton Hall – Die Welt zwischen uns), the war film The Tank (Der Tiger) and the German edition of the comedy format LOL: Last One Laughing.
The titles still to come include Franziska Margarete Hoenisch’s series Superior and the competition show Holey Moley – Minigolf Extreme. Two films are also on the slate: Stefan Bühling’s Der erste letzte Tag (“The First Last Day”), adapted from a Sebastian Fitzek novel, and Dennis Gansel’s action film The Prototype. With LOL and Holey Moley on it, the brief takes in entertainment as well as drama, wider than her film role at Netflix.
Erer, Bühler’s new manager, sits in the UK and international originals division led by Nicole Clemens at Amazon MGM Studios, Deadline reported. In an internal note seen by Deadline, Erer cited Bühler’s strong relationships with filmmakers, actors and producers in Germany, called her “a rare find” and described her arrival as “a real statement of our growth and ambition in the region”.
Her record at Netflix and Constantin
Bühler joined Netflix in late 2019 as director of international original film, dpa reported. DWDL.de says she was first based in London, with a brief that reached beyond the German-speaking markets, and moved to Berlin in 2021 to run film strategy for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Her time there covered Edward Berger’s All Quiet on the Western Front (Im Westen nichts Neues), which won four Oscars in 2023, including best international feature film.
Deadline also lists Blood Red Sky and Army of Thieves among her credits, along with the more recent Exterritorial and Brick. Both are on Netflix’s own all-time list of its 10 most popular non-English-language films, ranked by views in the first 91 days: Exterritorial is fourth and Brick 10th. Bühler left Netflix over the summer; THE SPOT dates her exit to August.
Before Netflix, she spent more than a decade at Constantin Film, where her roles included head of acquisitions and international co-productions. Before that she was head of acquisitions at SquareOne Entertainment, Deadline and C21Media report.
Pratt’s move, and what isn’t known
Pratt had been at Amazon for almost 12 years, according to C21Media. Earlier this month Disney+ named him vice-president of original production for Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Deadline reported, effectively replacing the departing Benjamina Mirnik-Voges. He starts there in early 2027. Reports differ on whether he has already gone: DWDL.de and dpa describe him as having left Prime Video, while C21Media says he is preparing to leave. Prime Video has not said who runs German originals until Bühler arrives, or whether the appointment changes the German team’s size or budget.
Our reading
Bühler built her reputation on features, and the slate she takes over is mostly series and formats. The Tank and The Prototype show that Amazon already backs German genre films. Whether it backs more under a film specialist will show in her first orders after 1 December and in what Prime Video brings to the Berlinale in February.
For producers in Germany, the larger change is the reset across all three platforms. Projects developed with departing executives now sit with successors who did not choose them. The first renewals and cancellations from Prime Video, Netflix and Disney+ in 2027 will show how much of the old slate survives.
