La venganza del Charro Negro opens on MXN93.7m ($5.0m) and 1.45 million tickets in Mexico

The eighth Las Leyendas film has the second-biggest opening for a Mexican title on published lists, behind Eugenio Derbez’s 2013 hit, with the Day of the Dead still ahead.

MEXICO CITY – La venganza del Charro Negro (“The Revenge of the Black Charro”), the eighth animated feature in Ánima Estudios’ Las Leyendas series, opened at No. 1 in Mexico with MXN93.65m ($5.0m) and 1.45 million admissions from Thursday 22 to Sunday 25 October. The figures come from the weekly box office chart of the National Chamber of the Film Industry (Canacine), which uses Comscore data. Videocine releases the film.

Key facts

  • La venganza del Charro Negro (Ánima Estudios, released by Videocine): MXN93.65m and 1.45 million admissions on 22–25 October, according to Canacine
  • Opening day, Thursday 22 October: a reported MXN14.6m ($780,000) from 308,066 admissions, the fourth-best first day for a Mexican film on an analyst’s list
  • Second-biggest opening for a Mexican film on published lists, behind Instructions Not Included (No se aceptan devoluciones, 2013) and its MXN149.6m
  • The 2018 predecessor, Legend Quest: The Legend of the Black Charro (La leyenda del Charro Negro), took MXN100.8m from 2.41 million admissions over its entire run, Videocine says

In four days the sequel is MXN7.2m short of the whole cinema run of the 2018 film it follows. Its second weekend runs into the Day of the Dead holidays on 1 and 2 November.

A wide margin at the top

The live screening BTS World Tour ‘Arirang’ in Buenos Aires: Live Viewing, released by Trafalgar Releasing, was second with MXN37.23m ($2.0m) from 145,690 admissions. Warner Bros.’ Clayface, which opened at No. 1 in the US and Canada and topped a weak weekend in Brazil, was third in Mexico with MXN23.84m ($1.3m) and 289,860 admissions. The Las Leyendas film took more than those two titles combined.

On Canacine’s figures, La venganza del Charro Negro earned about MXN64.6 ($3.44) per admission, against MXN82.2 ($4.38) for Clayface and roughly MXN256 ($13.60) for the BTS event, a FilmBunch calculation. Canacine lists the film’s cumulative total as MXN93.81m ($5.0m), slightly above the four-day number; the chart does not explain the difference.

Where it sits among Mexican openings

Box office analyst Edgar Apanco put Thursday’s takings at MXN14.6m from 308,066 admissions, and ranked them fourth among first days for Mexican films. Ahead of it on his list are Eugenio Derbez’s Instructions Not Included on MXN18.5m, No manches Frida 2 (“No Way, Frida 2”, 2019) on MXN16.9m and the animated Top Cat: The Movie (Don Gato y su pandilla, 2011) on MXN15.4m. SensaCine México reported his first-day takings and ranking on 24 October; the admissions figure was reported by El Siglo de Torreón, citing him, on 26 October. They are an analyst’s numbers, not Canacine’s.

Over the full four days, comparisons published on 26 October by the entertainment sites SensaCine México and Paloma & Nacho place the film second among openings for Mexican productions. Derbez’s comedy still leads, with MXN149.6m in its first weekend in 2013. Behind the new release come No manches Frida 2 on MXN88.8m and Don’t Blame the Kid (¿Qué culpa tiene el niño?, 2016) on MXN65.6m. All are nominal pesos, not adjusted for inflation or ticket prices, so the 2013 record remains about MXN56m out of reach. Talk of a challenge to Derbez is about the full run: SensaCine México wrote on 24 October that analysts expect the film to compete with the attendance of Instructions Not Included, which Paloma & Nacho puts at about MXN600m over its run.

One early report differs. Kinótico, publishing at 07:47 local time on Monday 26 October and citing Canacine, gave the film MXN60.7m ($3.2m) and 984,759 admissions, with MXN16.0m ($850,000) for Clayface. Its top 10 is not the same list as Canacine’s: six of its titles are absent from the chart, and its figures for the three films at the top are 21% to 35% lower. Canacine’s published chart, whose MXN93,651,208 is also the figure in Paloma & Nacho, El Siglo de Torreón and Excélsior, is the one used here.

The series behind it

Las Leyendas began in 2007 with La leyenda de la Nahuala (“The Legend of the Nahuala”) and follows Leo San Juan through stories drawn from Mexican folklore, from La Llorona to the mummies of Guanajuato. Marvick Núñez directs. Benny Emmanuel voices Leo, Emilio Treviño his brother Nando and Erick Elías the Charro Negro, who in Videocine’s synopsis returns to settle a debt with Leo by going after Nando.

The previous cinema outing, Legend Quest: The Legend of the Black Charro, opened on 19 January 2018 on 698 screens and finished with 2,408,475 admissions and MXN100.8m, according to Videocine’s own review of that year. Local reports put its first weekend at about MXN29m, roughly a third of the new opening. The two Las Leyendas films made since then went straight to streaming, Paloma & Nacho notes.

With this release the series has passed MXN480m in Mexican cinemas, by Paloma & Nacho’s count, moving ahead of the Huevos animated films on MXN474.8m. Paloma & Nacho calls a finish above MXN300m ($16m) a strong possibility, and Excélsior reports estimates pointing the same way; that would make it the highest-grossing Mexican animated film. It is a projection, not a result.

Canacine’s next chart, covering the holiday weekend of 29 October to 1 November, will give the first measure of how well the film holds. We will add it when it is published.

Dollar conversions use the European Central Bank reference rates of 23 October 2026, the last before the end of the weekend, giving about MXN18.8 to the dollar.
