JAKARTA – Kuasa Gelap: Perjanjian Darah, the sequel to Paragon Pictures and Ideosource Entertainment’s 2024 exorcism horror Kuasa Gelap, passed 1 million admissions in Indonesian cinemas on 25 October, Jawa Pos reported. The film opened on 8 October and took 17 days to reach the mark.

Key facts

  • 1 million admissions reached on 25 October 2026, 17 days after the 8 October release
  • The 19th Indonesian film of 2026 to pass 1 million, according to Jawa Pos
  • The first Kuasa Gelap reached 1 million in about ten days in October 2024
  • Directed by Rizal Mantovani; written by Robert Ronny and Andri Cahyadi
  • Released on standard and IMAX screens

Indonesian producers and the local press treat 1 million admissions as the benchmark for a hit. By Jawa Pos’s count, 18 other Indonesian films had already crossed that line this year before Perjanjian Darah joined them. The sequel has done it at a slower pace than the original, though Jawa Pos still counted it among the best-selling films of October.

The first film opened on 3 October 2024 with about 82,000 admissions and passed 1 million on 13 October, CNN Indonesia reported at the time, citing the producers. Paragon said it had reached 1.4 million within 20 days, and the Indonesian film database filmindonesia.co.id now lists its total at 1,466,466. Kompas counted it as the 16th local film to pass 1 million in 2024; Paragon said it was the sixth Indonesian horror title of the year to do so.

The original also travelled. In November 2024 Paragon announced that Kuasa Gelap would be released in 53 countries, among them Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, Russia and territories in Latin America. Anami Films, Nuon Digital Indonesia, Legacy Pictures, Netzme and KMIF backed that film alongside Paragon and Ideosource, with Arvin Sutedja and Pandu Birantoro as co-producers. Executive producer Andi Boediman said at the time that he hoped it would open a path for Indonesian films to reach audiences abroad.

The sequel has not released daily figures, so it is not yet clear whether its slower start will leave it short of the first film’s total or whether a longer run can close the gap.

A bigger sequel, in IMAX

Rizal Mantovani took over as director from Bobby Prasetyo, who made the first film. Lukman Sardi and Jerome Kurnia return as the priests Romo Rendra and Romo Thomas, this time facing a demon called Rephaim. The cast also includes Venly Arauna, Ferry Salim, Feby Febiola, Lydia Kandou, Sisca Saras, Keysha Angelica, Kiki Narendra and Faiz Vishal. Robert Ronny and Prima Taufik produced, with Andi Boediman as executive producer.

Paragon announced in August that the film would play in IMAX, one of only a few Indonesian titles to get the format. Speaking at the Jakarta launch, Ronny told Kompas that IMAX was looking for local content because the Hollywood studios were releasing fewer films.

Donations for haze victims

The producers marked the milestone with donations to people affected by forest and land fires and the smoke haze they cause. After the first film hit 1 million, the team gave to 25 orphanages and Islamic boarding schools, Ronny told Jawa Pos. Nothing felt more urgent now, he said, than helping people who were struggling simply to breathe.

Local hits have been strong elsewhere in South-east and East Asia this autumn. In Vietnam, Trại buôn người passed VND485bn to become the country’s third-biggest local film, and in Korea domestic films took 73.1% of a late-September week. In China, meanwhile, Resident Evil held the top spot for a third weekend in a slow market.

The next number to watch is whether Perjanjian Darah passes the first film’s 1.47 million.
