The Film Information publisher will also oversee film buying. Suraj Singh, named Zee Studios business head five days earlier, will report to him. No slate or budget change was announced.

Zee Entertainment Enterprises has named Komal Nahta, a veteran of the Indian film trade, creative director of its movies business, the company said on Monday 26 October in its announcement, which The Economic Times also reported. Zee Studios, whose new business head Suraj Singh joins on 10 November, will report to Nahta. His remit also covers commercial and acquisition decisions on films across platforms. The company has branded itself as Z since May 2025.

Key facts

  • Komal Nahta named creative director, movies business, at Zee Entertainment Enterprises, announced 26 October 2026.
  • Zee Studios and movie acquisitions restructured; Zee Studios business head Suraj Singh and his team will report to Nahta.
  • Nahta reports to Zee chief executive Punit Goenka.
  • Remit: commercial and acquisition decisions on films for cinema, TV and streaming, mainly Hindi but also other languages.
  • Start date, pay and any change to the studio’s slate or budget: not disclosed.

The appointment rewires a structure set up five days earlier. On 21 October the company announced Singh as business head of Zee Studios, reporting to Goenka, with effect from 10 November. Under Monday’s arrangement, Singh sits one level lower, with Nahta between him and the chief executive.

What Zee says the change is for

In its statement, Zee said the overhaul is meant to speed up decisions, sharpen its investment choices and bring production and commissioning closer to acquisition and distribution, as The Economic Times and exchange4media reported. It also said it wants “more transparent and equitable processes” in the film business and a more disciplined approach to capital allocation. The appointment, it said, would help it expand the scale of its movies business, according to the text published by Zee Business.

Goenka described the move as part of building “a sharper, performance-oriented operating structure” and said the company was combining “creative conviction and commercial discipline” to get more value from its film investments. He cited Nahta’s knowledge of the business and his relationships across the industry.

Who Nahta is

Nahta has spent more than four decades in the Indian film trade, by Zee’s count, as an analyst, critic, publisher and television presenter. He publishes the long-running trade magazine Film Information and for 10 years hosted Bollywood Business, a trade programme on Zee’s ETC channel. He also sits on the advisory board of Cinema Capital, Zee said in the statement, which Storyboard18 also carried. On its website, Cinema Capital describes itself as an investment adviser managing a venture capital fund for film and entertainment that is registered with Sebi, India’s markets regulator.

He called the job “a homecoming of sorts” because of his years on ETC, and said he hoped to live up to the faith placed in him by Zee founder Subhash Chandra and Goenka.

Singh has more than two decades in production and studio operations, according to Zee. He founded BLIVE Productions and previously held senior roles at Dhoni Entertainment, Inspired Entertainment and Balaji Motion Pictures.

What is not known

Zee has not said when Nahta starts, whether he will continue to publish Film Information or comment publicly on India’s box office while overseeing a studio’s releases, or how decisions will be split between him and Singh. It has announced no change to Zee Studios’ slate, film budget or acquisition targets.

Our reading

Placing a trade analyst above the studio head puts box-office judgement in the senior role of Zee’s film business, with Singh’s production and studio experience one level below. Zee’s language, from capital discipline to transparent processes, points to tighter control of spending on productions and acquisitions, even as it says it wants the business to grow.

Zee says it hired Nahta for his knowledge of a market he has covered for four decades as an analyst, critic and publisher. The announcement does not say how that public trade work will sit alongside a job overseeing a studio’s releases and film buying. The first answers will come from what Zee or Nahta says about Film Information, and from the titles Zee produces or acquires once Singh joins on 10 November.
