Lee Sung Jin has launched production company Lila Pictures under his renewed Netflix overall deal and set two series in development at the streamer, Variety and Deadline reported on 4 November 2026. Deadline places the company formation about six months after he re-upped the overall deal. He has hired Hyunji Ward as senior vice president of film and television.
Key facts
- Banner: Lila Pictures, under Lee’s Netflix overall deal
- Hire: Hyunji Ward, SVP of film & television (ex-UTA; creative executive at Dakota Johnson’s TeaTime Pictures)
- Project 1: limited series The Only Child, Ali Wong to star and produce; Ava Wong Davies to write (Variety); Wong plays the mother of a professional archer preparing for a first gold medal
- Project 2: drama series Citizen’s Arrest, created by Gene Hong (Beef Season 2 writer-producer); two neighbours obsessed with solving a local crime
- Beef context (Netflix via Variety): Season 1 Global Top 10 for five weeks / Top 10 in 87 countries; 29 Emmy nominations and 11 wins across both seasons
The Only Child and Citizen’s Arrest
The Only Child reunites Lee with Ali Wong after the first season of Beef. Variety says Ava Wong Davies will write the limited series, with Wong producing as well as starring. Citizen’s Arrest, from Gene Hong, follows two longtime friends and neighbours whose crime obsession becomes an escape from private crises, per both Variety and Deadline. Neither outlet published episode orders, budgets or release windows.
Ward and the banner
Deadline traces Ward from UTA’s motion-picture department to four years as a creative executive at TeaTime Pictures, citing producing credits on Splitsville, Christy Hall’s Daddio and Zoe Lister-Jones’s Slip. Lee’s quote, carried by both trades, links the Sanskrit sense of “lila” as “the divine play” to the banner’s film and television work with collaborators including Wong and Hong, and jokes that “there will also be merch.”
Why it matters
The move formalises a producer banner inside an existing Netflix overall deal rather than a studio jump, and keeps Beef collaborators in the development pipeline while Season 2’s Oscar Isaac / Carey Mulligan chapter (April launch, Deadline) is still recent. Deadline notes further anthology chapters remain possible; Variety adds that Lee is repped by WME and Hansen Jacobson. Neither trade published a series order, episode count or budget for the Lila Pictures projects. Lee’s other recent credits noted by the trades include co-writing X-Men with Joanna Calo and EP’ing Alex Russell’s Lurker. Related FilmBunch streaming coverage includes Lee Chang-dong’s Netflix short Heartbeat, Toni Collette’s Apple TV Lenni and EloElo’s $80m Series C. More under Distribution & Streaming.
Our reading
For streamer talent deals, the signal is Netflix converting an overall deal into a named banner with two in-house projects rather than waiting for a third Beef season announcement. The next evidence is a series order or casting beyond Wong on The Only Child, and whether Lila Pictures takes film projects outside Netflix.
